Travis Perkins plc Seniors Masters

Supporting the Senior Tour again at Woburn this summer, Compression Advisory had the opportunity to receive exceptionally positive feedback from professional golfers previously fitted at the Seniors Open Championship in Walton-on Heath. Amongst the now common comments of “my legs feel great” and “i’ve been travelling in them and find them so supportive”, were the words of Dennis O’Sullivan, who only turned professional in 1997 and has won 6 seniors events and finished in the top ten on the Order of Merit several times.Dennis O’Sullivan

Dennis says – “I played 9 rounds of golf in 9 days. After 3 days, I certainly would have expected tiredness in my calves. When you are talking about rounds of golf for pro’s, it’s a good 7 hours in golf shoes – walking and hitting. After the tournament, I had no aches and pains in my calves or feet – and I would expect tired feet or sore calves – I would definitely recommend these gctech socks”

Dennis now joins other golf professionals such as Ian Poulter, Rory McIlroy & Lee Westwood in their use for incorporating socks containing gctech-nology into their busy professional lifestyles.

UK Athletics utilise Compression Advisory

UK Athletics utilise Compression Advisory as part of their rehabilitation strategy for Athletes training for 2012 London Olympics.

Competing at the level of an athlete can take its toll on the body. Athletes training for the Olympics for example can put so much pressure on their body and exert themselves in order to get the physique, ability and strength that is required of them to “win the race”. Able to prepare for their event, athletes will incorporate a host of routines, nutrients, recovery processes and products to aid that performance. Compression Advisory socks containing gctech have become part of the training package for athletes training for not only the 2011 Olympics but events prior to that too, for e.g. Philips Idowu at the Diamond League Birmingham meeting, where he sent a warning to his triple jump rival Teddy Tamgho by beating the Frenchman’s jump.Philips Idowu

With intense training, sometimes an injury can occur and as part of their rehabilitation protocol, UK Athletics have asked for the help of the Compression Advisory to assist getting their athletes back in shape. Dr Akbar de Medici of the Compression Advisory says “with all the lower leg injuries suffered by athletes, getting them back to competing at the top level requires the best services available. In my discussion with Paul Djkstra (Chief Medical Officer, UKA) we realised that good quality medical grade compression socks were an ideal adjunct in helping athletes recover from injuries by helping reduce lower ankle/calf swelling and to reduce the risk of post operative DVT”.

Russ Cochran wins the 2011 Senior Open Golf Championship

Compression Advisory kit out Russ Cochran with compression socks, who then goes on to win The 2011 Senior Open Golf Championship.

Compression Advisory attended the Seniors European Tour at Walton Heath recently to educate the pro’s and bystanders about their socks containing gctech and were welcomed with comments such as “where have you been all my life!”

Due to the nature of their sport and its locations, constant travel – which can result in swollen legs, and standing for hours on end – which can leave the pro with heavy legs are often reported as issues which leave them feeling fatigued and not at the best of their game.

One person who really reaped the benefits was winner of the Walton on Heath tournament – Russ Cochran, who immediately noticed that his legs felt better, walked away from Compression Advisory wearing them, and subsequently secured his win.Russ Cochran wins the 2011 Senior Open Golf Championship

Compression Advisory’s education crossed over both golf pro’s and public domains, with bystanders even being fitted to look after their legs whilst watching the pro’s!

Helping to protect against the risk of DVT

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a potentially fatal condition caused by the build-up of a clot of blood in the veins of the leg – often due to periods of inactivity or an underlying medical condition.

Elite athletes are, at first glance, not a group at immediate risk, however, their routines do increase the danger, and the consequences can be quite dramatic (and expensive). At the Compression Advisory, our medical team has advised over 2,500 of the world’s leading athletes on the dangers of DVT and how to avoid this condition.

The factors that increase the risk for an elite athlete include;

  1. Training/Competition – this may cause dehydration, bruising, and muscle tears.
  2. Travel – elite athletes often travel thousands of miles to compete. While seated venous blood flow decreases, this increases the risk of DVT and causes lower limb swelling.
  3. Injuries – Injuries can cause local swelling. Also they may require rest/rehabilitation or even need surgical treatment.

All of these factors can lead to DVT – we believe education and pre-planning is key in reducing the threat, and medical grade compression is a proven strategy employed by doctors to reduce the chances.

Take the recently highly publicised case of Serena Williams. An athlete who, at top of her game, suddenly found herself with a foot injury, Serena then developed several blood clots which travelled to both lungs following treatment from her injury. Serena’s situation went on to develop a near fatal blood clot on her stomach that, in her words left her “on my death bed” (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/jun/13/serena-williams-blood-clot-wimbledon)

Recovering from such major surgery and her foot injury has meant that Serena’s rehabilitation took nearly a year and she knows she has been very lucky, reporting “a lot of people die from that”. Serena is now aware of how the stomach clot developed, she says she wasn’t “moving and not doing much as much as I normally do. I Started flying a lot….thinking I was ok. And obviously, I wasn’t” (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story?id=6196383)

At the Compression Advisory, we know how important it is to look after your health, even when you don’t think you need to! Make sure you invest in a pair of medical grade compression socks that aid blood-flow – like our gctech socks – and prevent blood from pooling. If blood is encouraged to flow, you are much less likely to develop a DVT and maintain better health. And by the way, they’re great for improving your performance!

Compression Advisory teams up with London and South East stockists

Aware that not only the elite athletes can benefit from improved circulation, reduced fatigue and swelling and increased stamina and performance in their sport, the Compression Advisory have teamed up with sports stores in London and across the South East of England to make gctech™ compression garments available to all those who take their sport seriously.

Julie Sims, Retail Specialist at the Compression Advisory, has been leading the implementation for the Retail strategy, which began towards the end of 2010. The intention to push the product forward nationally, in selected retail outlets, was highlighted in discussion with her, “Having worked with elite sports men and women for the last 2 years, providing them with protocols suitable for their lifestyle, our expertise has grown around when gctech™ graduated compression socks are beneficial to the athlete. Promotional trials outside of the elite arena were met with a fantastically positive response. We then looked at specialist sports stores that are customer focused and well equipped to advise, according to their customers’ needs. Currently being stocked in 23 stores in the South of England, we know there is potential for gctech™ products to be promoted Nationwide, not only through our current partnerships with Runners Need and Intersport, but also in stand-alone sports stores. Our aim is to reach a wider audience and assist sports men and women, professional and amateur, across the Country, on the road to better health and wellbeing”.

We heard previously in the earlier Iwan Thomas press release how correct fitting is key, and when asked how customers may be fitted properly in store, Julie said “all our partner stores have received training by either our Doctor, Akbar de Medici, or myself, on the benefits of wear, situations where gctech™ graduated compression socks are ideal, on specific medical conditions that would require the customer to seek medical advice first, and how to size & fit the customer according to their lower leg size. This thorough training ensures the customer’s health is put first and that the sizing is appropriate for leg shape, not their foot size, which is a mistake a lot of household name companies have made in their compression garment ranges.

gctech™ graduated compression sports socks can be purchased in the following specialist sports stores:

  • Runners Need – London stores – Victoria, Liverpool Street, Camden, Oxford Circus, Monument, Kings Cross, Canary Wharf, Holborn, Kensington
  • Intersport Stores – Simply Sports Reigate & Oxted, Guildford School & Sport, Epsom Sports, Seymour Sports – Dorking, Wisdens Ltd – Hastings, Herne Hill Sports
  • The Jog Shop, Brighton
  • Advance Performance, Cambridge & Peterborough
  • The Running Outlet, Canterbury
  • Running Bath, Bath
  • London City Runner, London
  • Tortoise & Hare, Guildford

Any queries or requests for further information should be directed to Julie Sims at the Compression Advisory.

Supporting Iwan Thomas at the London Marathon 2011

Continuing their work with elite sports, Doctor Akbar de Medici, Medical Director at the Compression Advisory (www.compressionadvisory.com), was called upon, not for the first time, by Iwan Thomas, 400 metre sprint UK and Commonwealth Games record holder, to fit him with their clinically proven graduated sports compression socks.

Iwan, with the support of the Compression Advisory, entered his 3rd Marathon this year. He is one of a number of top athletes who are big fans of gctech™ compression socks. Iwan wore his gctech™ socks prior to the race (after working the London Marathon show), to keep his legs in tip-top condition; during the marathon, helping alleviate the strain that endurance running puts the body through; and after the race to help him recuperate, Iwan noted that his aching limbs recovered more quickly than would ordinarily be the case; he even collected his medal in them!

Iwan is one of millions of people who suffer from tightness and soreness in his calves and he considers gctech™ compression socks to be a valuable part of his running kit. By boosting the body’s circulation and removing all the waste products that build over time, fresh, oxygen rich blood flows to the vital muscle groups, helping to ease the pain and make the lower limbs more comfortable.

Dr Akbar de Medici, advisor to UK Athletics, comments, “It’s not uncommon for people training for competitive events to put their bodies under pressure and running is a prime example of when the legs take most of the strain of the sport. Correct fitting is key to ensuring that wearers of gctech™ socks receive all the benefits that come with the product, and that’s part of the service we offer. I see a lot of athletes who experience discomfort whilst competing and recovering from competition; I am delighted to say that Iwan made a full recovery in a quicker time this year, with minimal aches and pains.”

gctech™ teams up with NY Knicks Basketball Team

Compression Advisory, the team which provides advice and gctech™ compression socks to over 2000 elite sports stars and teams throughout UK and Europe has been in New York this week. The team was invited to New York to educate and measure the NY Knicks Basketball team for the gctech™ compression sock on invitation by Andy Barr the team’s performance specialist. Barr previously worked at Manchester City under Mark Hughes but last year moved to NY to take up an offer to work with the Knicks. The Compression Advisory team had previously worked with him at Manchester City.

In his first year as performance coach, Andy Barr realised that Basketball teams in the US travel huge distances, plus have multiple games in short periods so recovery was vitally important to the small squad of players. The team at compression advisory have a worldwide reputation as specialists in compression wear for sports professionals and athletes. Compression socks aid in both travel and recovery for anyone involved in active sport as well as for calf injury rehabilitation and calf muscle soreness and stiffness.

gctech™ and Compression Advisory Medical Director, Dr de Medici explains further ‘Elite sports people need to be in the best condition possible to perform at the highest level. We have worked with over 2,000 elite sports people (England Football, Manchester United, UK Athletics, England Rugby, World top ten golfers etc) and their associated medical support staff and have explained the benefits of gctech™. We now have thousands of regular professional users who wear the product for travel (reduce deep vein thrombosis risk, reduce swelling), performance and recovery. It’s exciting to be advising such a prestigious team as the NY Knicks and demonstrates that gctech™ medical grade graduated compression socks are becoming the first choice of the professional. We hope to see more and more amateur sports enthusiasts learn more about compression and how the socks can aid with training and recovery, as well as to aid with travel safety. We attended two events at Madison Square Gardens – one an evening where the new seasons players were introduced, including the big name signing Amar’e Stoudemire (on a contract estimated to be worth around $99.7 million over five years). We also attended the first friendly game of the season against Orlando Magic, which the Knicks lost but played with many of the reserve players. We also met many NY Knicks legendary players such as Walt Frazier and Allan Houston.

The rest of the time was spent at the training ground near Tarry Town NY state, working and educating the players and staff.

The British Rowing Team travel to New Zealand wearing gctech™ Socks

The Compression Advisory, distributors of the revolutionary sports socks gctech™, used by countless premiership football clubs, England football and rugby squads and numerous professional golfers, have been invited to educate the British Rowing team on medical grade compression at Pinsent & Redgrave Rowing Lake in Caversham.

More and more elite athletes and sports stars are using compression socks to aid with improved recovery after performance or training, improved performance during competitions and safer travel between events.  The medical grade gctech™ compression sock squeezes the calf muscle to improve blood flow.  It was developed by surgeons at University College London and has since become a well-known compression brand, specialising in producing Medical Grade products as opposed to more general compression items found on the high street.  Medical Director for the Compression Advisory, Dr. Akbar de Medici explains. ‘A compression sock is basically a ‘tight sock’, which should go all the way up to your knee from your foot. Squeezing your lower limb will affect the way your muscles work and the way your blood flows. There are several such socks on the market; the difference is ‘how’ they squeeze your leg and where they are most tight.  With medical grade compression and during sport you are looking for extra performance or help with recovery.  When you travel you want to reduce your risk of getting a DVT plus prevent ankle and lower limb swelling. Medical grade compression and the proven changes it makes to your physiology are ideal to wear in all these situations.’

The demonstration of gctech™ socks to The British Rowing Team highlighted travel benefits and the sock’s ability to keep swelling to a minimum and also how they can help boost the circulatory through legs so that athletes arrive at competitions in better condition. Long haul flights play havoc with the body and due to altitude, spatial confinement, lack of mobility, blood and fluids pool around the ankles, causing swelling and stiffness. gctech™ Socks will counteract these issues.

Matt Langridge, Alex Gregory, Ric Egington and Alex Partridge, the reigning world men’s four champions, will travel to New Zealand in October to defend their title after being named recently in a 61-strong GB Rowing Team for the event which runs from October 31 – November 7.

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, utilizes gctech™ Socks to help with his recovery

Following in the footsteps of other great footballers and even legends such as David Beckham, already using gctech™ products to aid with sports-related injuries and recovery, Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey’s recovery programme includes the wearing of gctech™ Medical Grade Compression Socks. Ramsey suffered a broken leg in February after playing against Stoke City.  Recovery has been a slow process but recently he has started training again, aided with gctech™, and there is hope he will be considered for play again very soon.

gctech™ has been in the news lately as a key supplier of compression socks for elite athletes.  It has become the leading brand in its field and is distributed by world experts in compression wear ‘The Compression Advisory’.  Its Medical Director, Dr. Akbar de Medici explains: ‘Compression has been known to help with injury and swelling for hundreds of years, however the refinements associated with medical grade compression have been used for some 30 years and most recently all UK NHS hospitals became required by law to fit anyone who has any risk of DVT with medical grade compression socks.  In the world of professional sports there is a growing understanding about how proper medical grade compression can be used to aid with recovery – either from performance or from injury.  We now advise and supply gctech™ socks to many of the premiership’s leading football clubs as well as the England football squad, England rugby team, The British Olympic teams and a growing number of professional golfers.  For serious injuries there is a period of recovery which can cause the leg to swell excessively. gctech™ Compression socks will aid that recovery process and reduce swelling.  The sock is also useful after surgery where you maybe at increased risk of DVT.’

Dr de Medici explains further ‘Elite sports people need to be in the best condition possible to perform at the highest level. I have worked with over 2,000 elite sports people (England Football, Manchester United, UK Athletics, England Rugby, World top ten golfers etc) and their associated medical support staff and have explained the benefits of gctech™. We now have thousands of regular professional users who wear the product for travel (reduce DVT risk, reduce swelling), performance and recovery.  It is great to see Aaron Ramsey wearing the products developed at University College London and everyone at The Compression Advisory and gctech™ wishes him the speediest and safest recovery.

gctech™ leads the way on ‘Flight Sock’ safety

With half term approaching and many people about to travel abroad, the importance of reducing the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) during the flight is back on the news agenda in the UK. A recent article in the Daily Telegraph details a woman’s collapse on a transatlantic flight and underlines the dangers travellers face. Increasingly travellers have taken to wearing ‘flight socks’ to prevent developing DVT’s on flights.

gctech™, makers of the gctech™ Medical Grade Graduated Compression sock is a company which markets ‘flight socks’ which were developed in association with University College London by surgeons specialising in compression wear. Medical Director of gctech™, Dr. Akbar de Medici said ‘The gctech™ compression sock is based on a current medical grade Class 1 compression sock used in the NHS. The design has been improved and modified for comfort, using high quality yarns, antibacterial and wicking agents; however the core technology remains unchanged. These changes make it ‘probably’ the most comfortable medical grade sock available. Yet the sock still classifies as a CE marked medical grade sock. The sizing system has been designed to ensure our range of socks fit most body shapes’ ensuring the compression profile does not change. Flight socks are not medical grade compression.
They are most often just ‘tight’ socks which do provide a degree of comfort but do not conform to the strict regulations in the NHS for DVT protection. The team at Compression Advisory have worked with several notable companies and the compression sock is now the garment of choice for travel for elite teams across the UK, such as England football, England rugby, Manchester United and Chelsea, to keep them safe, symptom free and ready to perform after any period of travel.

gctech™ flight socks are available on the Compression Advisory website: www.compressionadvisory.com for more information visit the site or call for advice before travelling on 020 7326 0900
